Nowadays wedding veil is a classic symbol of typical wedding. This accessory helps to make this day more special because it is not typical to wear veil on ordinary day.
But when and why did woman start to wear white veils for wedding? It is know that in ancient Rome woman wore veil as a part of her wedding costume. However it wasn't white but dark yellow and was called 'flammeum'. This was a symbol for long lasting and faithful marriage.
Some theories state that veil should be worn in order to protect bride from evil spirits and demons before she gets married.
One theory even says that veils are worn so that bride couldn't run away from her future huband. (Imagine running while wearing long piece of silk on your head) (:
Queen Victoria (1837-1901) is responsible for contemporary white wedding dress and veil as she had one for her wedding with prince Albert in 1840.
